Hey Dudley Dead;
I think a lot of people got taken for a ride by the government because they wanted to believe that the trust given over by the American people during World War Two could be extended indefinitely but the truth was it could not. Once the nation itself was no longer in jeopardy the darker side of human nature which you alluded to emerged and giving the government a blank check to fight Communism on the battlefront in Indo-China was neither realistic nor winnable.(Short of Nuclear War)
I can identify with the part of America that was family oriented and extremely patriotic but true patriotism considers the cost before it sends it's children and it's resources overseas to wage war.
We say we have learned those lessons from Vietnam but it would seem that both Afghanistan and Iraq are going to end up in the loss column in terms of the time effort and blood spent in those Nations by our Country.
